Marine ecosystem recovery
My research focuses on how marine ecosystems respond to climate change and other human pressures, and how Nature-based Solutions can contribute to ecosystem resilience and recovery. Through field surveys, environmental and statistical data analyses, I study changes in kelp forests, temperate reefs, fish communities, and the benefits these ecosystems provide to nature and people.
Kelp forests are among the most productive coastal ecosystems, yet they are increasingly affected by marine heatwaves, habitat degradation, and shifts in species composition. My work investigates how reef communities reorganize after extreme warming events and why some ecosystems remain resilient while others transition to degraded states. A particular focus lies on the ecological functions of fish communities and their contributions to biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal livelihoods.
Increasingly, my research explores how underwater acoustics can support the assessment, restoration, and long-term resilience of marine ecosystems. By combining ecology, emerging technologies, and visual storytelling, I aim to develop practical approaches for marine conservation and to connect science, conservation, and society.
